Stewardship Spotlight - EMERGENCIES: Most people know Lutheran World Relief for their emergency operations. When a natural disaster hits, LWR is there to provide relief and recovery, thanks to the response, generosity and prayers of our faithful donors. We think of disasters that are “sudden-onset” such as hurricanes, earthquakes, tornadoes or tsunamis. In those instances, LWR moves in quickly, assisting with cleanup and removal, then moving into recovery and rehabilitation, staying until the community is strong and sustainable. “Slow-onset” emergencies are different and often overlooked, causing greater challenges and more devastation. In places like Kenya, Somalia and Sudan, drought and conflict have resulted in hunger and thirst for millions. In Thailand, refugees depend on outside assistance, forcing them to stay for decades, baring children who never know life outside the camps. LWR works hard to identify slow-onset emergencies earlier and implement strategies to change and improve such cruel and destructive cycles.
A Message from the Principal: Crosswalks are Working - We are thankful that almost everyone is walking over to the crosswalks from cars, to use them. Try not to park in the middle of the crosswalks if you drop off at the main entrance: either park behind or in front of them. Washington, D.C. – Mr. Wrege had the privilege of participating in the 8th grade trip this past week. Zion students were complimented again and again about their respectful behavior. This includes our tour leader and bus driver. We witnessed first-hand the new Museum of the Bible, we were at the World War II Memorial when an Honor Flight arrived, and four of our students were privileged with laying a wreath at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier. A special thank you to trip leader, Miss Stephanie Sauls. See photos of the trip on the Zion Facebook page, “Zion Lutheran Church and School.” Outdoor Education - For the first time, Zion has offered this new way to learn – all in Creation. We were blessed to have our 6th and 7th graders attend Camp Lone Star for three days of curriculum learning outdoors. Thanks to Mrs. Suzan Winkleman who led the trip. Honoring Mrs. Kelly David - Mark your calendar for Sunday, May 27. At 10:45 am worship, Dr. Jon Laabs from the Lutheran Education Association will travel from Chicago to present Mrs. David her National Distinguished Elementary Teacher of the Year award. A potluck meal and reception follow – to celebrate even more. You are all invited! Thanks to God for our wonderful teachers – and for this opportunity to rejoice with Kelly!
